REAL CONVERSATIONS COMPANION: SONIA ORTIZ
OCTOBER: REAL CONVERSATIONS with MELODY FOX
On Domestic Violence and Its Effect In Our Communities
Sonia Ortiz is from Fort Apache in the Bronx. She is a Parent Peer Coach at Community Connections for Youth. Sonia is a perfect example of a woman who has been empowered to overcome personal adversity to make something substantial of her life. She wanted, and needed to turn her life around—away from the hardships and a psychologically searing childhood. She has embarked on, and continues a life-long journey to enrich her own life, the life of her three children, and the lives of people around her.
Sonia was chosen as the winner of the “Empowered By You” campaign, sponsored by the Seven Bar Foundation. She has received notable recognition from former East Harlem Councilwoman, and current NYC Council Speaker, Melissa Mark-Viverito, as well as the Mujeres Del Barrio (Women of East Harlem) activist organization in the area of Community Activism (Education and Health). She is the founder of Kids On_Da_Move and Director of Youth Outreach for Luis Castillo (Batboy Squeegee), author of Clubhouse Confidential; and founder of Squeegee’s Children’s Literacy Foundation, among other ventures. She is passionate about sharing her own story of triumph over adversity with others.
